About the museum

The Beregi Múzeum (Bereg Museum) was founded in 1963 by Csiszár Árpád, a Reformed minister from Gergelyiugornya. At first he looked after the collection almost alone; the staff was only expanded in 1975. The museum collects objects from the settlements of the former Vásárosnamény district, including the 22 Bereg villages that remained in Hungary after Trianon.

The collection now comprises more than 70,000 objects. The ethnographic material, including textiles, embroidered eggs, ceramics and cast-iron objects, numbers more than 13,000 pieces. The archaeological material counts 18,000 objects, and the historical document collection and the photo collection hold further items in the tens of thousands.

Most of the exhibitions have been shown since 2007 on the main square of Vásárosnamény, in the renovated Baroque Tomcsányi-kastély. Eight interlinked exhibition units and a display depot present the region’s characteristic features. The school-history collection is housed in the Máthé-kúria (Máthé Manor) on Rákóczi Ferenc út, which is temporarily closed for renovation.
