About the museum
The Hegyvidéki Helytörténeti Gyűjtemény (Hegyvidék Local History Collection) was founded in 1973 by district local historians and local patriots working together. It initially operated in a small garage space on Városmajor utca, then in 1984 moved to an exhibition venue on Maros utca that had functioned as a gallery, and in 1998 to the former school at Városmajor utca 16. At the end of 2004 the Hegyvidék municipal government decided to set up a separate local history collection, and on 1 January 2005 it was re-established as an independent institution.
Over the decades the collection has grown to more than forty thousand items, including photographs, postcards, documents and objects. Since 2017 it has operated as a branch of MOM Kulturális Nonprofit Kft., next to the former terminus of the Zugliget horse tram, in the renovated Lóvasút Kulturális és Rendezvényközpont (Lóvasút Cultural and Events Centre).
The exhibition hall hosts temporary exhibitions, lectures and talks by the Hegyvidéki Nosztalgia Klub (Hegyvidék Nostalgia Club). The collection also publishes an online object catalogue and a postcard collection.
