About the museum
The idea of a sculptors’ colony arose in 1967 at the foot of Szársomlyó hill, in a former quarry. The following year the artists set up a permanent summer artists’ colony in the nearby Gyimóthy-villa. The condition for taking part was that each participant donate one work to the public collection; these works form the basis of the open-air sculpture park.
In the early years mainly young Hungarian sculptors worked here; later artists from abroad also joined. The works were made from local stone; their backdrop is the Upper Jurassic limestone wall of the quarry, and to the south the Drava Valley opens up. The number of works has now grown to around 130; since 2009 the collection has enjoyed the protection of a listed monument.
Since spring 2012 the park has been run by the Duna-Dráva Nemzeti Park Igazgatóság (Duna-Dráva National Park Directorate). The reception building, completed in 2020, houses a ticket office, toilets, and an exhibition and community space with panels on the Natura 2000 values and the history of the park; from its roof terrace the whole sculpture collection can be seen. The Kikerics panoramic walkway runs on a raised metal path so that visitors do not trample the vegetation.
