About the museum
Siklósi vár (Siklós Castle) is one of the best-preserved military structures in Hungary and an important monument of the Hungarian Renaissance. Its first walls were laid in the 13th century, around 1260; its first written mention is known from 1294. Held by the Siklósi, Garai and Perényi families, it was a seat of the palatine (nádor).
The renovation begun in 2009 was carried out in two phases with support of around HUF 1.5 billion, and a modern visitor centre opened in spring 2011. During the works the Gothic part was made visible through a glass floor.
The castle today houses several permanent exhibitions: the torture chamber and the noble prison cells were among the first to open, in 1956; there is also a wine museum, a Renaissance furniture exhibition, a medieval weapons and military-history display, a First World War exhibition and a Croatian and Serbian minority exhibition. The castle grounds also have Játékország (Toyland), a play area for children.
