About the museum
The farmstead at Árpád utca 21, next to the flood-protection wall, has been under listed-monument protection since 1974. Its two facing wings were built at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. It was built by the peasant farmer Nagy György János, or possibly his father; later it was inhabited by the Csáki family and then by the Elek family. The city bought the house in 1974, renovation began in 1983, and the furnished complex was opened to the public on 6 October 1984.
In the parlour of the main building, which has adobe walls and a reed roof, there are painted Vásárhely furniture and wool embroideries; Vásárhely embroidery was made on hemp linen with yarn spun from racka sheep wool and home-dyed wool thread. The painted ceilings of the rooms have been restored; the oldest layer, with flower-bouquet and tendril decoration, can be seen in the parlour. The opposite range of buildings contains a kitchen with an open chimney hood, a soldier’s room (katonaszoba), a pantry, two stables and a carriage shed. The heritage house is an exhibition venue and also hosts events linked to folk customs and museum education sessions.
