About the museum

Windmills appeared on the edge of Hódmezővásárhely and in the farmstead world at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The Papi windmill was built in 1856 by Csánki Bálint and came into the possession of the Papi family in 1891. The Országos Műemléki Felügyelőség (National Monuments Office) declared it a folk monument in 1962.

The four-sail mill is truncated-cone shaped: lower diameter 9.7 m, upper diameter 5.6 m, wall height 8.8 m, and its cap can be turned. The interior has four levels: the great-wheel floor (nagykerékpad), the speed-wheel floor (sebeskerékpad), the stone floor with three pairs of millstones (kőpad), and the flour floor (lisztespad), to which the ground grain arrives through chutes (sípok). At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, as industrial mills advanced, the windmills of the farmstead world lost their importance; Papi Imre, the last miller of the Erzsébeti úti mill, however, made a living from the trade until the 1950s.
