About the museum

Pannonhalmi Főapátság (Pannonhalma Archabbey) was founded in 996 and is one of Hungary’s oldest Benedictine monasteries still in operation. The complex on Szent Márton Hill is an important site of Hungarian Christianity and culture and part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The present early Gothic three-aisled church was consecrated in 1224; the late Gothic form of the cloister dates from the renovation completed in 1486.

Over the centuries the monastery was rebuilt several times. After the Ottoman occupation and later alterations, the neoclassical library building and the tower took on their present appearance in the early 19th century. The Main Library (Főkönyvtár), one of the most beautiful historic library halls in Hungary, is decorated by the Viennese artist Joseph Klieber and holds around four hundred thousand volumes. It reopened in January 2026 after closure for insect fumigation in 2025.

The abbey is still home to Benedictine monks; the community prays several times a day in the basilica, and visitors may join the midday prayer. Visitors can see the basilica, the cloister, the lower church, the treasury and the library. The grounds also include a medicinal herb garden, a perfume museum, the abbey’s wine cellar and places to eat and drink.
