Győri Bencés Látogatóközpont

Interactive exhibition in the attic of the Benedictine church and monastery in Győr, presenting the four-hundred-year history of the grammar school and the roof structure of the baroque church.

Opening hoursAdmission HUF 3,900

About the museum

The Benedictine church of Loyolai Szent Ignác (St Ignatius of Loyola) on Széchenyi tér is Hungary's first baroque-style church and the earliest baroque listed building in today's country. It was built by the Jesuits, who also founded a school in Győr; the Benedictines later took over the leadership of the school. The church underwent a major reconstruction, preserving its original furnishings and altarpieces.

In May 2026 an interactive exhibition titled “400 tanév – Élő örökség a győri bencés gimnáziumban” (400 Years of School – Living Heritage at the Benedictine Grammar School in Győr) opened in the roof space of the church and the Benedictine monastery. Visitors can walk in a visitor space built above the church vault, from where the brick structure of the vault can be seen; in the monastery attic they can also see the original baroque chimneys. The exhibition was realised with support from the Interreg VI-A Hungary–Slovakia Programme.

The exhibition presents the teaching work of the Jesuits and Benedictines, changes in school life, the lives of teachers and the school's collections (antiquarian collection, natural history collection, incunabula, coins, weapons, ornithological collection). The guided tour starting from the treasury also covers the liturgical objects of the church, period books and charters; other tours present the church, the refectory, the stairwell with frescoes and the former Jesuit pharmacy.
