About the museum
Founding pharmacies alongside the colleges was part of the Jesuits' programme. According to the town's law book, a pharmacy operated in the Jesuit friary in Győr from 1634; in the 1680s it moved to the north-west corner of the building and became public. It could be entered through the entrance opening onto the main square, and women could also visit it. After the dissolution of the Jesuit order in 1773, its last monk-pharmacist, Joannes Tumbler, bought it and, as a civilian owner, moved it to the Patikaház (Pharmacy House).
The pharmacy operated in several places over the following decades, and in 1971 it returned to its original place, in the friary, which has belonged to the Benedictines since 1802. The restoration of the rooms began in 1970. The pharmacy still operates under the name Széchényi Múzeumpatika (Széchényi Museum Pharmacy), maintained by the Benedictines of Győr. It is named after Széchényi György (1592–1695), Bishop of Győr and later Archbishop of Esztergom, one of the greatest benefactors of the Jesuits of Győr.
The central fresco of the dispensing room depicts the Assumption of the Virgin Mary; around it are four herbal emblems, and the stucco putti symbolise the seasons. The most valuable object of the pharmacy is the bronze mortar given in 1660; the cabinets also hold blue tin-glazed jars of 1689, 16th-century faience vessels and medical books. The pharmacy does not currently operate; the rooms of the museum pharmacy can be seen on organised guided tours.
