About the museum
The Balatonszemes exhibition site operates in a building erected in the last quarter of the 18th century as the stable of the postal horse-relay station on the Szemes estate of the Hunyady family. Since 1962 the building has housed the exhibitions of the Postamúzeum (Postal Museum). The railway travelling post-office carriage placed here and the newly built carriage shed later made the site a thematic exhibition site on the history of transport.
The exhibition currently on view, “Kocsiszekértől az elektromobilig – a postai szállítás története” (“From Horse-Drawn Carts to Electric Vehicles – The History of Postal Transport”), presents the finest pieces of the Postamúzeum’s vehicle collection. Using original vehicles and models, as well as audio and moving-image content, it traces the history, technical development and changing fields of use of the vehicles used for postal services. In the garden stands the communications memorial by the sculptor Trischler Ferenc, which commemorates postal workers and telecommunications staff who died in the course of their service.
