About the museum
The Rábaköz Museum received its operating licence in 1960 and has been a member of the Győr-Sopron County Museum Organisation since 1962. As a regional museum, it collects the archaeological, historical, ethnographic and fine-art heritage of the former Kapuvár district.
The permanent exhibition is located in the south wing of the Esterházy Castle on the town’s main square, a building of 17th-century origin that was rebuilt several times in the 18th and 19th centuries. The local-history and ethnographic exhibition “Kapuvár anno – Fejezetek a város és környéke történetéből” (Kapuvár Anno – Chapters from the History of the Town and Its Surroundings) opened in 2011.
Walking along the corridor, visitors can learn about the town’s natural treasures, the circumstances of the first humans’ appearance and old material remains. Four display rooms present the history of Kapuvár: the historic room the world of the market-town burghers, the next room peasant life, and the last one the decorative art and folk costume of Kapuvár. On the east side of the museum, a portrait gallery commemorates the people born or living here who brought fame to the town.
