About the museum
For a long time the Rábaköz had no museum. The first local collection was set up between the two world wars, when a drawing teacher at the civic school in Csorna collected and displayed ethnographic objects together with his pupils. Today's museum opened in 1969 in the northern wing of the former Premonstratensian friary, first as a branch collection of the Xántus János Múzeum in Győr, and by 1990 had developed into an independent museum.
The first friary building of the Premonstratensian provostry was built around 1180. Its present late Baroque form dates from 1802 to 1808, when it was rebuilt after a fire. The upper-floor exhibitions can be reached via the provost's staircase, which is closed off by a wrought-iron gate.
The museum welcomes visitors with four permanent exhibitions. The local history exhibition, opened in 2019, traces the history of Csorna from Mesolithic stone tools to the age of urbanisation and gives particular emphasis to the victorious battle of Csorna on 13 June 1849 during the War of Independence. The ethnographic exhibition presents the peasant culture of the Rábaköz, its crafts and the folk costume of Csorna. Alongside them are the reception exhibition of the visual artist Hertay Mária and the chamber exhibition of the naive sculptor Horváth Róbert.
