Köztisztasági Múzeum

A collection unique in the country on the history of street cleaning in the capital: sixteen old machines for watering, sweeping and waste collection.

Opening hours unknown

About the museum

The Köztisztasági Múzeum is unique in the country in its themes and material. It was established with the intention of preserving the old special-purpose machines owned by the company and commemorating the history of the company and of the street-cleaning sector.

The museum preserves sixteen different special-purpose machines: watering and washing machines, sweepers, waste collection vehicles, salt spreaders and ploughing machines from the end of the 1800s to the end of the 20th century; visitors can sit in most of them. The exhibition also deals with the complex history of municipal street cleaning in the capital, using photographs, documents and other objects.

Visitors learn how the modernising urban lifestyle and industrial development affected the composition of waste and regular rubbish collection, and how the appearance of the automobile and of hard road surfaces changed street-cleaning machinery and the spread of litter bins. The exhibition also presents the history of the company and of its predecessor, the Köztisztasági Hivatal (Street Cleaning Office), from its foundation to the present day. An important piece is the 1920s Rába water-tank watering lorry, borrowed from the collection of the Közlekedési Múzeum (Museum of Transport).
