About the museum

The Selmec library was established in 1735. It is Europe’s only technical and natural science specialist library founded in the 18th century that has survived intact, almost complete and in its original state. The collection of thirty thousand volumes contains most of the 16th–19th-century specialist literature on technology and the natural sciences; its stock of 18th- and 19th-century technical and natural science journals is especially rich.

The University History Collection, the museum part of the Miskolc University Library, Archive, Museum unit, was founded in 1985 as a specialist collection. Alongside the history of the university, it collects memorabilia of student traditions: uniforms, including grubens (ceremonial miners’ costumes) and mining jackets given by teachers and former students, banners, rings, medals, cups and axes. It also has a significant photograph collection.

The exhibition From Selmec to Miskolc 1735–1985 and the treasures of the Selmec mineral collection can be seen on the Egyetemváros campus of the University of Miskolc. Visits and guided tours are free of charge.
