Muzej Valpovštine

About the museum

The Muzej Valpovštine was founded in 1956 by the Društvo prijatelja starina Valpovo (Valpovo Society of Friends of Antiquities) and is housed in the Valpovo Castle (dvorac Prandau-Normann). Over the years the display was expanded from two to eleven rooms, and local history enthusiasts assembled historical, archaeological, hunting, ethnographic, zoological-geological, firefighting and craft collections.

Regular museum and gallery activity continued until 1991, when the objects were placed in storage because of the castle's renovation and the threat of war. From January 2006 a curator was employed again and a review of the museum's holdings began, in which more than 10,000 inventory items were recorded.

The museum's largest and most valuable exhibit is in fact the medieval and Baroque complex of the Valpovo Castle itself. The museum now operates within the Ustanova za kulturne djelatnosti “Ante Evetović Miroljub“ Valpovo; it has a permanent display, a public library and an archive.
