About the museum
The natural history collection in Pécs goes back more than a century: as early as 1904, with its first permanent exhibition, the Pécsi Városi Múzeum (Pécs City Museum) also ran a natural history department. The collection consists of herbarium material, fossils and insect collections, which grow through targeted research, bequests and donations.
The building at Szabadság utca 2 reopened in December 2023, after several years of renovation, with a temporary exhibition on cave exploration. The museum aims to present the natural heritage of South Transdanubia and the diversity of life on Earth; visitors can also see the remains of the Pécs mammoth up close.
The museum regularly organises temporary exhibitions and scientific programmes, and a separate activity room is available for museum education sessions. It is a recommended destination for families and school groups alike.
