About the museum
The 13th-century core of Simontornya Castle has a regular square courtyard; its eastern front wall and the V-shaped loopholes arranged on the upper floor are still visible. Its length of 12 fathoms (about 21 metres) still determines the size of the castle today. In the 14th century the Lackfi family built a palace inside it, whose great hall is recalled by two Gothic twin windows.
In the time of the Garai family an outer enclosure wall surrounded the castle. The Renaissance structure, dating from the early 16th century, starts from the foundations of the southern wing: the gate tower and the old tower with its staircase tower are the only ones of this Renaissance ensemble in Hungary to have survived intact. A Gothic inscription dated 1508 can be read above a window on the ground floor.
During the War of Independence the old tower was converted into a cannon tower, and its battlements were vaulted over. The castle was restored and opened as a castle museum; today it awaits visitors with exhibitions, museum education sessions and a VR experience.
