About the museum
The memorial house in Sárszentlőrinc is a late Baroque (Zopf style) residential house built around 1800, in which Petőfi Sándor lived from 1831 to 1833 as a pupil of the Lutheran school. A plaque and a bronze relief portrait of the poet on the street façade commemorate him. The museum was founded in 1973, on the 150th anniversary of Petőfi’s birth.
The L-shaped house, built in a comb-type arrangement, has a pillared gallery with a wall parapet running along its courtyard side. In the rooms, domed and built-in stoves, and in the kitchens, open chimney hoods, evoke the atmosphere of earlier times. Its present appearance and interior were mainly achieved when it was handed over in 2008; it enjoys protection as a folk monument.
