About the museum

The Szalma-Kincs-Tár is based on the decades-long collecting and research work of Tüskés Tünde. The exhibition opened on 15 March 2002 with the participation of ethnographer Andrásfalvy Bertalan; its professional direction was provided by the Janus Pannonius Múzeum. For twenty years it was housed in a two-storey building converted from an old stable in the kindergarten yard of Zengővárkony.

In summer 2022 the collection was renewed and moved to the village’s Tájház. The Tájház is a good example of Baranya folk architecture: built by farmer Dékány Máté in the mid-19th century, it has been a village heritage house since 1982 and is a listed monument of national importance. The municipality of Zengővárkony renovated it in 2021–2022 with the support of the Teleki László Foundation’s Folk Architecture Programme, and the renewed exhibitions reopened in September 2022.

The collection contains about 600 straw objects from 36 countries and, through the technical and artistic diversity of straw, introduces the hidden cultures of peoples. In the main building, alongside the straw objects, a traditional 19th-century szép szoba (best room) can be seen, while in the old stable the Míves Tojás Múzeum keeps several thousand decorated eggs.
