About the museum
In Szany, attempts to collect local ethnographic material had been made since the 1960s, but for lack of a suitable place these objects were lost or destroyed. In the 1980s the late baroque, classicising building of the former bishop’s summer residence, which had previously been used as a school, became available: the upper rooms became a library, and on the ground floor the long-planned local history collection found its place.
The collection was assembled from the work of the local heritage study circle (honismereti szakkör), with the help of the county museum. It has three exhibition rooms and one furnished peasant room: the first room presents 19th-century agriculture, the second industry, and the third contains festive and everyday pieces of Szany folk costume. Photographs on the history of costume are also displayed in the entrance corridor.
