About the museum
The Máriapócs collection of the Order of Saint Basil the Great has been operating for about two decades in the parental home of the two Dudás brothers, the so-called Dudásporta. The books, photographs and memorabilia collected by the order are kept here; most of the collecting work was done by Dudás László Bertalan (1909–2004), Basilian provincial superior, whose brother Dudás Mihály Miklós (1902–1972) was the second bishop of the Hajdúdorog Eparchy.
The renovated village house with a veranda was divided into three parts. The first, the parlour and kitchen, recalls the life of the former peasant family of Máriapócs in which the two boys spent their childhood. The second part presents the books, paintings, photographs and memorabilia of the Basilian order. Between 1985 and 1987 it was extended with a new room and a surrounding gallery, where visitors can see the history of Pócs, pictures depicting the three miraculous weepings, documents and objects, memorabilia of the pilgrimages, records of the Basilians’ pastoral, educational and economic activities, and souvenirs of the 1991 papal visit.
The Basilians came to Máriapócs in the first half of the 18th century, where in 1731 they began building the pilgrimage church and the monastery; their monks served pilgrims until 1950.
