Opening hoursAdmission HUF 1,800

About the museum

The museum operates in the building of the Minorite monastery in Nyírbátor, whose history goes back to 1490. The present Baroque friary was built at the beginning of the 18th century with the support of the Károlyi family, joined to the church. After the dissolution of the monastic orders, the monastery has housed the museum, founded in 1955, since 1961.

The collection, built up under the work of the founding director Szalontai Barnabás, consists of archaeological, ethnographic, historical, weapons, fine and applied art, and photographic collections. Since 2013 it has operated as a rural branch institution of the Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum Közgyűjteményi Központ (Hungarian National Museum Public Collections Centre).

The building was completely renovated between 2022 and 2024, and the exhibitions were re-arranged. The renewed museum reopened on 12 October 2024. On the ground floor is an interactive exhibition on the history of the Báthori family, using digital tools and artificial intelligence; on the upper floor is a local-history exhibition presenting the past of the market town.
