About the museum
The Vay Castle in Vaja was built at the beginning of the 17th century next to a medieval church, with towers at two corners. During the Rákóczi War of Independence it was the scene of important negotiations; II. Rákóczi Ferenc visited twice, and memorial plaques on the wall preserve the memory of his visits.
The castle was renovated between 1960 and 1962, and in 1964 the Vay Ádám Kuruc Múzeum (Vay Ádám Kuruc Museum) opened in it. The founder of the museum was Molnár Mátyás. A further complete renovation, begun in the mid-1990s, was completed in 2001.
The permanent exhibitions of the collection, which operates as a member institution of the Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum Közgyűjteményi Központ (Hungarian National Museum Public Collections Centre), present the role of the Upper Tisza region in the Rákóczi War of Independence, the state administration of the Rákóczi era, the history of the Vay family and 18th- and 19th-century aristocratic furniture. On the cellar level a lapidarium shows the building history of the castle, and the second-floor state hall is the castle’s former representative space.
