About the museum
The predecessor of the castle in Baktalórántháza is said to have been built by the Barkóczy family in the first third of the 17th century as a single-storey hunting lodge. It later came into the possession of the Károlyi family, and II. Rákóczi Ferenc stayed there several times. In 1834 the Dégenfeld family acquired it, and it remained theirs until 1945. In the 1840s–1850s, during the time of Count Dégenfeld Imre, the castle was rebuilt, given an upper floor and a neoclassical style. The castle park dates back to the 19th century.
The building was renovated again in the early 2000s, and it has been operating as an interactive castle museum since December 2015. Ten rooms present the history of Baktalórántháza and its surroundings, from the Bronze Age to the Mongol invasion, the Middle Ages, the Ottoman occupation, the Rákóczi War of Independence and the 1848–49 revolution. Separate rooms recall reform-era fashion, the passions of the upper classes at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, a nursery and a women’s salon.
Since 15 May 2026 the museum has once again been open, with its permanent exhibitions and the castle park.
