About the museum
The Savaria Museum operates in the Kultúrpalota (Cultural Palace) in Szombathely, which was opened to the general public in 1908; the building housed both the museum and the library. The institution's collections preserve around half a million objects. The material of the prehistoric settlement near Sé, of the Celtic hill fort of Velem and of ancient Savaria is outstanding even by international standards. It also houses the largest Pannonian-age fossil plant collection in Central Europe.
On the upper floor, the archaeological, earth-history and prehistory exhibition Változó kultúrák a változó tájban (Changing Cultures in a Changing Landscape) presents the geological history and the most beautiful archaeological monuments of Vas County. In the Roman room, the interactive exhibition Savaria – római város a Borostyánkő úton (Savaria – a Roman City on the Amber Road, 1st–4th century AD) describes the everyday life of the ancient city. The Migration-period and medieval archaeological monuments derive from the legacy of the Huns, Germanic peoples, Avars and the settling Hungarians. In the basement is the Roman stone collection (lapidarium). The rooms of the historical exhibition – the Baroque, the Empire and the Biedermeier room, and the clock corridor – evoke the bourgeois world of the 17th to 19th centuries.
