About the museum
The Early Christian Mausoleum (Ókeresztény Mauzóleum) is one of the larger cemetery buildings of Sopianae, Roman-era Pécs. It is a two-storey structure: the chapel above ground (cella memoria) served as a place of remembrance, while the dead were laid in the crypt below. The building was discovered in 1975, during repair work on a nearby waterfall.
The burial chamber was originally a single painted room, with a large, richly carved sarcophagus on its south side. It was later extended to the west, and two further sarcophagi were placed in it. The wall paintings combine decorative patterns and figurative scenes: on the north wall are Adam and Eve’s fall, the prophet Daniel in the lions’ den and the tree of life; on the east wall is the Christ monogram, below which is a fragment of a red-robed figure seated on a throne, decorated with ears of wheat and palm fronds.
The 4th-century burial chamber is part of the early Christian cemetery of Pécs, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000.
