About the museum
The museum's roots go back to the Pécsi Városi Múzeum (Pécs Municipal Museum): its first permanent exhibition opened on 27 November 1904. The basis of the ethnographic collection was the Ormánság material of Lukácsy Imre, followed by the state-supported collections of Marosi Arnold. The museum has operated since 1933 in the protected, Romantic-style building at Rákóczi út 15.
In 1951 the institution was merged with the Baranya County Museum and named Janus Pannonius Múzeum. The ethnographic collection today holds around thirty thousand objects, including one of the largest textile collections in the country, folk furniture, ceramics, sacred objects, 18th-century embroideries, Ormánság woven textiles and the costumes of the Baranya ethnic groups.
The permanent exhibitions Baranya népművészete (Folk Art of Baranya) and Ormánsági házbelső (Interior of an Ormánság House) present, alongside the Hungarian ethnographic groups, the folk-culture material of the Croats, Serbs, Germans and Roma living in the county, from the vanished peasant world of the 19th and 20th centuries. Chamber exhibitions are regularly shown in the temporary exhibition space, and school classes often learn about our traditions within its walls.
