About the museum

The Szerecsen patika was Pécs’s first public pharmacy: in 1697 the pharmacist Seitz Nepomuk János from Zagreb founded it near today’s Jókai tér. In 1864 Sipőcz István bought the pharmacy together with the house and the medicinal herb garden and moved it to its present site. For the 200th anniversary, in 1897, the architect Schlauch Imre renovated the building.

The carved oak neo-rococo furniture in the interior of the former pharmacy was made in the Pécs workshop of Hoffmann Károly, and the floral ceramic inlays of the furniture come from the Zsolnay factory. The late 19th-century fittings were restored in 1990 by the pharmacist and furniture restorer Répay Gábor. The finest piece in the dispensing area is the graceful drinking fountain (1884) by the sculptor Zsolnay Gyula.

The pharmacy museum, now run by the Janus Pannonius Múzeum, presents the history of pharmacy and medicine with finely made medicine bottles, pharmacy vessels of wood, metal and ceramic, old medical instruments and a collection of prescriptions. Special features include scales based on old units of weight (pound, lat) and the hand-cranked tablet press.
