About the museum
The Csontváry Múzeum was set up in the city centre of Pécs, at Janus Pannonius utca 11, close to the cathedral and the early Christian burial chambers, to present the work of Csontváry Kosztka Tivadar (1853–1919). After the artist’s death his paintings were auctioned, and they reached Pécs only through the intervention of the architect Gerlóczy Gedeon.
The permanent exhibition opened on 10 October 1973 in the main hall of the former TIT building; in the month of its opening, twenty thousand people visited it. In 1983 the museum was rearranged, and after extensive conservation and restoration work the paintings returned to the walls. In 1994–95 the restored oeuvre travelled to Stockholm, Budapest, Rotterdam and Munich.
The most popular permanent exhibition of the Janus Pannonius Museum includes the legendary Magányos cédrus (The Lonely Cedar) and the Baalbek, roughly the size of a small apartment. Alongside the permanent display, chamber exhibitions are regularly held in the museum’s temporary exhibition space.
