About the museum
The predecessor of the Nagykanizsa museum is the antiquities collection of the Piarist grammar school from the early 1900s. It was nationalised in 1949, when its collecting area in Southern Zala was defined; since 1951 it has borne the name of Thúry György. For a long time the collection operated in several buildings; in summer 2000 the administration and the storerooms moved to Zrínyi utca, and the exhibitions were housed in the building at Fő út 5.
The textile collection of the ethnographic department is among the most significant in Transdanubia, and the extent and quality of the archaeological collection rival those of similar museums in the region. On 9 February 2006 the permanent exhibition “Emberek, utak, kapcsolatok” opened in the Fő út building, presenting the millennia of Southern Zala, the 18th-century development of Nagykanizsa and the flourishing of the age of dualism. The Magyar Plakát Háza on Erzsébet tér can be visited as a separate venue.
