About the museum
The Vársziget of Zalavár was the site of the Frankish border-count centre in the 9th century, between 833 and 860, where numerous churches were built. In the area of the memorial park the monumental foundation walls of the former Szent Adorján basilica, with its unique ground plan, can be seen today.
In the mid-1990s the island was still covered by forest and scrub. The memorial erected in 1938 in honour of Saint Stephen had been destroyed by neglect and vandalism. Putting the site in order was initiated by the construction of the Kis-Balaton water reservoir and by the intention of the Bulgarian side, which wanted to erect a memorial at the site of the former activity of Cyril and Methodius (1985). The leadership of Zala County then decided to arrange the memorial site.
The reconstruction of the Szent István Chapel on the foundations of an 11th-century church was linked to the 1100th anniversary of the Hungarian conquest (1996). In 2001 the first phase was completed with the presentation of the ruins of the church of Saint Hadrian the Martyr. On the 1000th anniversary of the founding of the county, in 2009, it was decided to build the Millennium Memorial; the structure designed by Makovecz Imre bears on its tree of life the names of the 258 settlements of Zala County. Selected finds from the 9th–13th-century archaeological material are also presented in the park.
