About the museum
The museum is housed in the Zichy Castle on the Kastélydomb (Castle Hill) of Várpalota, of Baroque origin. The upper manor castle was built by the Zichy family between 1721 and 1725; after the fire of 1860 destroyed it, Count Waldstein János had it rebuilt under the direction of Ybl Miklós. In the 20th century the castle served as a military command building and officers’ casino, was badly damaged in the Second World War, and was restored in 1954 to Ybl’s original plans.
The Trianon Múzeum Alapítvány (Trianon Museum Foundation) was established in 2001, and the museum opened in the walls of the castle in 2004. In the following years it held numerous thematic exhibitions; from 2012 the castle has been run by the Magyar Házak Nonprofit Kft. Under the Vár- és Kastélyprogram (Castle and Manor Programme), the entire building was reconstructed from 2017 and the exhibitions were renewed; the renewed museum reopened in autumn 2023.
The permanent exhibition presents, in twelve scenes, the background to the Trianon dictated peace, a Hungary in flight, the irredentist movements after the First World War, the temporary reannexation of parts of the country, the events of the Second World War and the post-war reprisals. The exhibition is complemented by an interactive play area, a music room and a cinema. The museum also includes the Nagy-Magyarország Park (Greater Hungary Park), a few kilometres from the town.
