Balatonkenesei Tájház

About the museum

The house at Kossuth Lajos utca 6 stands on the street line, in comb-type development, and bears the characteristics of the folk building of the Balaton region. Its layout: a first room with a vestibule (pitvar), a kitchen with a free-standing chimney (szabadkéményes), a back room with a pantry, a storeroom, a coach house and a stable; in front of the first two rooms runs an arched porch with a masonry parapet. Opposite the house, in the courtyard, a summer kitchen was built in 1926. Its walls were made of rammed earth, adobe and fired brick on a rubble-stone plinth.

In 1983 the Műemlék Felügyelőség (Monument Inspectorate) purchased the protected homestead and renovated it to plans by Wirth Péter. The restoration work was completed in 1990, and on 16 June 1991 the local history collection was opened. The Tájház received the title “Év Tájháza” (Heritage House of the Year) in 2011.

Visitors can get to know the past of Kenese and gain an insight into the folk culture of the Balaton region.

Permanent exhibition

• Balatonkenesei Tájház – néprajzi és helytörténeti gyűjtemény – The furnishings of the protected peasant house, which recalls folk building in the Balaton region, and a local history collection presenting the past of Kenese.
