Palotavárosi kiállítóhely

The Serbian peasant house and hat-maker’s workshop in the Rác utca open-air museum present the history and folk life of the Palotaváros district of Székesfehérvár.

Opening hoursAdmission HUF 1,000

About the museum

In the western part of Székesfehérvár, in Palotaváros, the Rác utca stretches at the foot of ten-storey panel blocks; since the 1980s it has been preserved as an open-air museum. At its centre stands the Serbian Orthodox church, next to which a few buildings preserve the atmosphere of the former Rácváros (Serbian quarter), reflect traditional folk architecture and have taken on new functions.

In house No. 11 on Rác utca, an exhibition titled “Palotavárosi emlékek” (Memories of Palotaváros) opened in 1988, presenting the history and ethnography of the district. This is one of the most characteristic Serbian peasant houses, which fully preserves its original interior. The last owner of the building was Danica Csikós; the first room and the kitchen were furnished with furniture and household objects bought from her, while the exhibition in the back room recalls the former society and way of life of Palotaváros.

The memories of the crafts for which the district was famous, those requiring large amounts of water (fullers, shoemakers and tanners), are preserved in a separate display, while in another room the furnishings, tools and machines of the Dittrich-kalaposműhely (Dittrich hat-maker’s workshop) can be seen.
