About the museum

The Szatmári Múzeum in Mátészalka opened its doors in 1975. Its aim is to collect, preserve and make accessible the intellectual and material heritage of the region, in the service of Szatmár research.

The museum’s most famous collection is the nearly hundred-strong stock of carts, wagons, carriages and sledges, the largest in Central Europe. All the basic types of Hungarian carts and their regional variants are displayed in a three-part, circular-panorama cart shed. The main building also houses exhibitions on woodcarvings from Szatmár-Bereg, shoemaking in Szatmár, the history of electrification, folk decorative art and interiors.

The museum also manages the Szalkai-Schwartz House, Hungary’s first electrified residential building, where the Tony Curtis Memorial Room, an exhibition on the history of electrification and a doll collection can be seen. The key to the synagogue in Mátészalka can be obtained at the museum.
