About the museum

The Várostörténeti Múzeum (Town History Museum) was founded in 1985 from the holdings of the Modern and Most Recent History Department of the Janus Pannonius Múzeum. The building is the late Baroque Tímárház (Tanners’ House), a two-storey tannery with a drying loft built in 1786, which was the site of leather processing in Pécs. The original permanent exhibition presented the history of the town in modern times, from its liberation from Ottoman rule (1686) to 1948.

The venue is currently closed temporarily for technical reasons. The renewed permanent exhibition Csak egy kis munka… – MÁLENKIJ ROBOT can be seen in the same building; it has been open for visits by prior registration since 31 March 2026.

The exhibition recalls the tragedy of the málenkij robot: on 26 December 1944, the civilian population of Baranya began to be rounded up, and in January 1945 cattle wagons set off for the Soviet camps. Through life stories, original objects, installations evoking the world of the camps (barracks, bunks, watchtower, barbed wire), films made with eyewitnesses and original camp photographs, the exhibition makes the forced labour of camp life tangible.
