About the museum
Victor Vasarely (Vásárhelyi Győző, 1906–1997), initiator and most prominent representative of the Op Art movement, was born in Pécs; as a young man he emigrated to France, where he created most of his oeuvre. He donated several of his works to Pécs, and the museum opened in 1976 in the house where he spent the first years of his life.
The exhibition presents all creative periods of the artist, from early advertising graphics through abstract geometric and kinetic works to large paintings and textile pictures built on the spatial effect of colour. As the master wished, outstanding pieces from the international collection he donated are also shown here: works by predecessors and contemporaries, integrated among Vasarely’s own works rather than in a separate block.
The permanent exhibition of the museum was renewed in 2026, and after the closure for the renovation it has been open again since 9 April 2026. It includes several works that visitors have not been able to see in the past fifty years, such as the nearly one-square-metre screen prints of the VI-VA album. On the ground floor, the interactive S.P.A.C.E. museum education space awaits visitors with a creative spirit.
