About the museum

The predecessor of the Janus Pannonius Múzeum was the Pécs City Museum, whose establishment the town assembly decided in 1899; its first permanent exhibition opened on 27 November 1904. In 1951 it merged with the Baranya County Museum, and in the same year it was named after Janus Pannonius. Today the museum operates several exhibition venues in Pécs.

During the Ottoman occupation, the building at Széchenyi tér 12 was the house of the janissary aga Csór Ibrahim. In 1687 the Jesuits opened a school here; in the 19th century it housed a bishop’s orphanage, then a bank, a royal prosecutor’s office and a printing house. In 1941 Baranya County bought it for the county museum; from 1949 to 2009 the archaeology department operated in the building.

Since 2023 the house has operated as the Janus Pannonius Múzeum Látogatóközpont (Janus Pannonius Museum Visitor Centre, new name Janus Pannonius Múzeum SZ12), together with the Római Kőtár (Roman Stone Collection). The stone collection was completed in the courtyard in 1962; after its renovation it has been open to visitors again since December 2023. On the upper floor, the permanent exhibition A hely szelleme – Genius Loci opened on 16 November 2024; it presents the history of Pécs and Baranya from prehistoric times to the present, drawing on archaeological, local history and ethnographic collections.
