About the museum
The Pécs Modern Magyar Képtár (Modern Hungarian Gallery) is the art department of the Janus Pannonius Museum, which mainly collects 19th- and 20th-century Hungarian works of art. In 1957, Academician Dr. Gegesi Kiss Pál donated a modern art collection of around 350 pieces to the museum, and the gallery was formed from it. It began operating a few months after the suppression of the 1956 revolution, half a year before the opening of the Magyar Nemzeti Galéria (Hungarian National Gallery).
The collection now numbers around ten thousand works of art. Its chronology begins in the last decades of the 19th century with the paintings of Mednyánszky László and Rippl-Rónai József, leads through the surreal world of Gulácsy Lajos and the avant-garde aims of the Nyolcak, and continues to the outstanding works of later decades.
The display includes internationally renowned Hungarian artists of the mid-20th century, such as the sculptures of Amerigo Tot and the works of Breuer Marcell, architect and designer, and it extends to today’s outstanding artists, including Keserü Ilona from Pécs. Alongside the permanent display, the gallery’s two temporary exhibition spaces regularly host retrospectives and chamber exhibitions.
