About the museum
The open-air ethnographic museum opened its gates in 1973 as the second skanzen in the country. The relocated original buildings evoke the atmosphere of the old village: some stand in closed rows like a street, others further apart, as is typical of the scattered settlements of the Őrség. The main parts of the exhibition are the village main street, the Őrség hill and the cellar row.
Among the residential buildings are the homes of poor peasants, well-off peasants and nobles, log-walled, wattle-and-daub and rammed-earth houses, with original furnishings from the 18th–20th-century way of life. Farmyards, outbuildings, workshops and community buildings have also been brought here. In the centre of the village stands a replica of the late Baroque chapel of Perenye, built in 1800.
Among the most interesting structures are the early 18th-century wooden bell frame of Molnaszecsőd, the smithy with an open chimney moved from Cák, the German house with a smoke kitchen from Pornóapáti, built in 1792, and the single-hearth Slovenian smoke house from Felsőszölnök. The skanzen keeps indigenous Hungarian domestic animals, has planted old grape varieties and native fruit trees, and grows the plants used in folk medicine and cooking in the Menta-kert (Mint Garden).
