About the museum
Collecting old objects began in Vasvár in the 1920s, but this material was destroyed in the Second World War. Collecting was restarted by Németh Antal in 1948, and in 1951 a district museum was founded on the basis of his private collection and local archaeological finds.
The Vasvár Museum today is a collective name: it includes the Németh Antal Local History Collection, the exhibition “Kapuk a múltba – képek Vas vármegye középkorából” (Gates to the Past – Pictures from the Medieval Vas County) and a county-history research centre, the Török Richárd memorial exhibition, and the Dominican Order History Collection. All of this is housed on the upper floor and in the attic of the Dominican monastery building, with the entrance on the Main Square.
The museum is run by the Vasvár Dominican Monastery Foundation. It also offers town walking tours for visitors and sessions for school groups; researchers can use the local-history, county-history and Dominican-order-history material.
