About the museum
Mindszenty József (born Pehm József) was born in Csehimindszent on 29 March 1892. The family house was originally a long, simple rammed-earth (tömésház) house; in the 1920s it was extended with a room where the cardinal used to rest during his rare visits home, and in 1959 it was remodelled in the fashion of the time.
In 2000 the Magyarországi Mindszenty Alapítvány (Hungarian Mindszenty Foundation) bought the house from the family; it was later handed over to the municipality on condition that a museum be established in it. On the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the cardinal’s birth, in a commemorative year announced in 2012, the work was completed with state support and donations, and on 29 September 2013 the memorial house opened with an exhibition of objects from the foundation and from relatives. The Terror Háza Múzeum (House of Terror Museum) offered the material of its temporary exhibition “Mindszenty a magyarok lelkiismerete” (Mindszenty, the Conscience of the Hungarians) to the memorial house, so from December 2013 two permanent exhibitions operate in the Prince-Primate’s parental home.
In 2015 the courtyard was paved with stone, a bread-oven house and a washroom block were built, and the former stable building was rebuilt, where there is also an exhibition.
