About the museum
The idea of founding a museum in Szerencs arose in the 1960s; from 1965 local history collecting began, in which the local history circle of Angyal Béla took part. In 1967 Dr. Petrikovits László, a dentist and art collector, donated around 400,000 postcards, as well as ex libris, books, and archaeological, ethnographic and fine art objects, to the town, on condition that a museum be created from them and that they never be removed from Szerencs. The institution was able to begin operating on 3 December 1968.
As a regional museum, the Zempléni Múzeum also cared for the cultural heritage of Szerencs and its surroundings, the Taktaköz and the Harangod. Renovation work was carried out at the Rákóczi Castle, which housed the institution, between 1967 and 1989, so the museum was forced to move several times; it took up its final home within the historic walls in October 1991. Since 1 January 2013 it has been maintained by the Szerencs Town Council, received the status of a regional museum, and the Szerencsi Cukormúzeum (Szerencs Sugar Museum) was attached to it as a branch institution.
The collection’s main profile continues to be the internationally renowned postcard collection and the significant ex libris collection. The museum also collects the historical, archaeological, ethnographic and fine art heritage of Szerencs and its surroundings, and takes part in gathering memorabilia of domestic sugar and chocolate production.
