Anfiteatro romano di Sutri

Archaeological park of Sutri with the Roman amphitheatre carved into the tufa, the rock-cut necropolis and the Mithraeum, set in a rock-cut chapel.

About the museum

The amphitheatre of Sutri is the most important monument of the ancient town. It is carved entirely into a bank of tufa opposite the modern town. It is modest in size (49.60 × 40.80 metres), and its outline follows the shape of the rock. It has two entrances; the one towards the Via Cassia is badly damaged by the collapse of the access passage and the tiers of seats. The arena is surrounded by a podium, and ten doors lead into a covered passageway that ends near the two entrances.

The cavea consists of three tiers of seating separated by corridors, with four stairways (vomitoria) for the lower tier and eight boxes still recognisable in the middle tier. Since there are no precise historical, epigraphic or architectural clues, the date, suggested by the simplicity of the layout, ranges from the last decades of the 1st century BC to the early 1st century AD.

The archaeological park of the Antichissima Città di Sutri (Most Ancient City of Sutri) includes, in addition to the amphitheatre, the rock-cut necropolis along the Via Cassia and the former Mithraeum, a space carved into the rock. The Mithraeum can be visited in timed groups, with an audio guide or a guided tour. The site is run by Archeoares and is part of the Sutri Pass circuit.
