About the museum
The Museo Archeologico Virtuale di Narce, abbreviated MAVNA, was established in 2012 on the initiative of the Mazzano Romano municipal administration. Since 2019 it has been a founding member of the Sistema Museale Maneat, a network of civic museums created to enhance shared cultural heritage.
The name recalls the ancient Faliscan city of Narce, whose remains lie mainly in the territories of Mazzano Romano and Calcata. Intensive excavations at the end of the 19th century brought to light rich grave goods. Part of them went into the collections of the emerging Villa Giulia Museum, and another part was sold on the antiquities market and bought by institutions in Italy and abroad.
MAVNA was created precisely to foster the “virtual return” of these dispersed antiquities, thanks to agreements with Italian and international museums. The virtual heritage includes reproductions of archaeological materials, digitised archive documents such as excavation notebooks and sales records of the period, reconstructions of architectural elements of the ancient city, films, 3D reconstructions and views of the Narce landscape.
