About the museum
The museum grew out of a municipal antiquarium set up in 1964 and restructured in 1985; in 1997 it was extended to occupy the whole ground floor of the town hall, on Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III, overlooking Lake Bracciano. It was officially inaugurated on 20 March 2000, after Gregorio Bianchini was appointed director.
The collections, in three rooms, come from three Etruscan tombs discovered between 1965 and the late 1980s in the necropolises of Olivetello and Rigostano and date from the 8th to the 6th century BC. The Tomb of the Flabelli gives the museum its name with its very thin bronze fans worked in relief; the Annesi Piacentini tomb yielded bucchero, gold and amber jewellery and fragments of mineralised cloth. The most notable room holds the tomb of an 8th-century BC warrior, nicknamed Avle, with a dagger, shield, fibulae and a razor.
The museum runs experimental archaeology workshops for families, adults, schools and universities.
