About the museum
In 1595 the Giustiniani family acquired the fief of Bassano, which had belonged to the Anguillara. The marquis Vincenzo Giustiniani enlarged the palace and designed the garden and park, drawing on models from the gardens of northern Europe; the park today covers about 23 hectares. The entrance portal is flanked by Roman busts of the 2nd century AD, and the courtyard walls were frescoed with scenes of triumph by Antonio Tempesta.
The piano nobile preserves an important Baroque decorative cycle, with works by Bernardo Castello, Paolo Guidotti, Domenichino and Francesco Albani. On the ground floor there is a small theatre in the English taste. Most of the furnishings and objects of the palace were transferred to the nearby Palazzo Odescalchi in Bracciano.
The State purchased the villa in 2001. Today the complex is run by the Museo autonomo delle Ville monumentali della Tuscia, which also includes Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola, Palazzo Altieri in Oriolo Romano and Villa Lante in Bagnaia.
