About the museum
The Antica Falegnameria is a workshop museum in the old part of Massa Marittima, in Vicolo Massaini, dedicated to the work of the carpenter and, more broadly, of the craftsman. It is part of the municipality's museum network and documents a traditional trade that shaped everyday life in the area.
The objects on display come from the workshop of the Forgeschi family of Gerfalco, in the municipality of Montieri: for five generations, from the late 19th century until 1990, the Forgeschi worked wood in this workshop. The museum recreates the working environment and preserves original tools, implements and machinery.
The display also shows the shift from entirely manual work to machine-based production, which made output faster; among the pieces on show are the first mechanical planes and saws. The museum opened in the 1990s, after the workshop had ceased operating.
