About the museum
The Torre del Candeliere was built in 1228 as a watchtower and as a symbol of the independence of the free commune of Massa Marittima. After the conquest of the territory, Siena had it rebuilt lower and linked it with a large arch to the Cassero Senese, the fortress built to control the local population.
In later periods the tower was fitted with a bell, added at the beginning of the 15th century and replaced in 1760, and with a clock on the east side, installed in 1443, whose mechanism can be seen from inside.
The visit allows visitors to walk along the arch and part of the walls of the Cassero, with wide views over the town, the sea and the island of Elba. The tower is part of the Massa Marittima museum system and is run by the Cooperativa Colline Metallifere.
