About the museum

The museum, promoted by the municipality together with the diocese of Massa Marittima-Piombino, was inaugurated on 19 March 2005 in the rooms of the San Pietro all’Orto complex. An early attempt to form a picture gallery dates back to 1867, when the Museo Civico was established in the convent of Sant’Agostino; later the gallery was suppressed and the works were kept in a storeroom, except for Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s Maestà, which was displayed in the Palazzo Comunale.

The museum occupies the former Augustinian convent of San Pietro all’Orto, built in 1273 and transferred to the municipality in 1866. The works come mainly from the cathedral of San Cerbone and from other churches of the city, thanks to an agreement between the municipality, the heritage authorities (Soprintendenze) of Grosseto and Siena, and the diocese. The complex also houses the Centro espositivo di arte contemporanea Angiolino Martini.

The route unfolds through five rooms. The first gathers sculptural fragments of the 12th and 13th centuries and ten relief panels, once walled into the inner façade of the Duomo and known as the “black reliefs”. The second is devoted to Pisan and Sienese Gothic sculpture: there are statuettes of saints and prophets attributed to Gano di Fazio and Camaino di Crescentino, three sculptures attributed to Giovanni Pisano from the crowning of the cathedral façade (a horse, a crouching figure and a griffin), a wooden Crucifix attributed to the same sculptor, and a stauroteca cross signed by masters from Pisa. The masterpiece of the collection is Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s Maestà.
